One Phone Call at a Time
I wish that everyone was as lucky as I am. Why am I so lucky? For a lot of reasons. But, one of them is that I have the best Best Friend ever. Chrissie and I have been friends since we were old enough to walk across the street (literally). We grew up together. We know so much about each other. We are very different. She is tall and I am not. She is a nurse and I can not deal with blood or bodily functions. But even with those differences, through the years we have remained friends.
Now our friendship has not always been perfect. I remember the time I spit on her (I have no idea why) and she did not talk to me for like a week. There have been times that we have both been jealous of other friendships. But we have experienced some amazing things together as well. I had the privilege of dedicating her twins in Church. I had the privilege of officiating her wedding to Dustin (who is also amazing). She was there for me when I was convinced that Jerry would not show up for our wedding. When my mother died, I went to Chrissies. We are always there for each other.
Though sadly, that does not always mean physically. We live a lot closer to each other now than we did when I spent 3 years in Kansas, but it is still so hard to figure out when we can actually physically meet up. So we do not often get to see each other. So we talk. On the phone. Weekly we call each other through Facebook messenger to solve all of the worlds problems.
We talk about anything and everything. How the kids are doing in school. How work is going. What she is up to with her soap business (seriously if you want awesome homemade soap, you should check out Chemistry Soapworks). How things are going at the church. We talk about our hopes and our dreams. Our fears and our concerns. We laugh. Sometimes we cry. We talk about privilege and racism (and sometimes the government shuts us down because we are getting too political-- they are always listening lol). We talk about life.
I say all of this to say that we all need that. Each and every single one of us need someone in our lives that we can share all of that with. Yes, I have Jerry, and I do share all of these things with him. But, my relationship with Chrissie goes back farther than my relationship with Jerry. Chrissie was there for me when my own house was not always a safe space and many times she became that safe space. Even when we were younger we would try to solve the worlds problems together. Then it was in person. Now it is one phone call at a time.
I hope you have a Chrissie. Because that is your person. And your person is so valuable to your life that no amount of time or distance that goes between physical visits or phone conversations can take away that value. Call them! Work together to solve the world's problems. And if by chance you accidentally connect someone else into the phone call, just pray secretly that they didn't hear too much.
